The research project AquaNES investigates the combination of near-natural and technical processes for water treatment.

Soil filters: In this experimental plant, two vertically flowed-through planted soil filters are operated as post-treatment for ozonation. They differ in the filter materials used. In one soil filter, sand is used as filter material, in the other soil filter a much coarser mixture of lava gravel and biochar is used. Both soil filters are covered with typical wetland plants.
